An EthnoGuessr alternative that guesses dialect, not ethnicity
EthnoGuessr is a guessing game about people. DialectGuessr is a guessing game about English. The maps look cousinly from a distance — a round, a pin, a reveal — and they answer different questions. One asks you to infer identity. The other asks you to place a way of speaking on a dialect map built from a fixed question bank.
What the board is allowed to know
Every clue in DialectGuessr is an answer to a survey question: soda or pop, trainers or sneakers, whether “car” keeps its R. The speaker is a hometown and an answer pattern, not a face and not a census category. Community players opt in after the quiz; researched profiles are regional accents, named as accents.
That limit is the product. The site already ranks your own English against regional profiles and famous recorded speakers. Turning the same bank around as a guessing game keeps the object of the guess linguistic. An ethnicity-guessing game is a different object, and this one is not a reskin of it.
How the games actually play
Classic gives you a fingerprint and asks for a pin. Elimination hides a dialect region and lets you strike the ones that cannot fit. Detective hides four sentences and asks which feature each one carries. The daily puzzle is the shared five-round board. None of those modes ask you to guess a person's background.
Scoring follows dialect territory, not a demographic label. Land inside the belt where that answer pattern lives and you score. Miss the belt and you do not. The reveal teaches geography of speech — Appalachia versus Texas, Geordie versus Scouse — which is the same geography the accent guides spell out in prose.
If you arrived from EthnoGuessr
You already know how to read a map under a clock. Use that here on clues that name words and sounds. Take the accent quiz if you want the inverted version: your own answers, your closest regions, no guessing about anyone else.
This page exists so the query has an honest landing that does not pretend the two games are the same. The playable versions are linked. Start at Classic, or open Elimination if you would rather rule regions out than drop a pin.
