- What is DialectGuessr?
- DialectGuessr — also written Dialect Guessr — is a free accent quiz and dialect guessing game. The quiz asks 29 questions about pronunciation and vocabulary, then names the region your English matches and the closest of 80 famous speakers to the way you talk. The game gives you real speakers and asks you to pin where each of them grew up.
- What accent do I have?
- Answer the 29 questions and the quiz will tell you. It scores the words you use and the way you pronounce them against 65 regional profiles — English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish, American, Canadian, Caribbean, Australian, New Zealand, South African, Ghanaian, Nigerian, Kenyan, Liberian, Indian, Sri Lankan, Pakistani, Malaysian, Singaporean, Hong Kong, Filipino, Hawaiian and African American English — and ranks the ones closest to your own speech, with the features that put you there. There is no audio and nothing to record: it asks, it does not listen.
- Where is my accent from?
- The quiz answers this two ways. It names the regional profiles your answers match most closely, and it puts your hometown pin on a world map alongside everyone else who has answered — so you can see whether people who answer the way you do actually live where you grew up. Accents travel, and the map is often the more interesting half of the answer.
- Which celebrity has my accent?
- That is what the quiz answers. Your answers are scored against 80 reference profiles built from primary-source recordings of speakers including Adele, Kendrick Lamar, Cillian Murphy, Dolly Parton and Trevor Noah, and you are given the closest match with a percentage and the features you share.
- What is the DialectGuessr game?
- A guessing game for accents, in the spirit of GeoGuessr. Each round shows you how one real speaker talks — the words they use and the way they pronounce things — and you pin the map where you think they grew up. Five rounds a game, scored on how close you land, with a new daily puzzle everybody plays the same.
- Is there a daily puzzle?
- Yes. Every day there is one puzzle of five speakers, the same five for everybody, playable once — so a score means something when you send it to somebody. It keeps a streak, tells you how you did against the speakers you missed, and counts down to the next one at midnight UTC. Unlimited practice rounds are there too if you would rather keep playing.
- Is there an elimination mode?
- Yes. Elimination is deduction rather than pinning: one hidden dialect region per round, one clue free and four more to ask for, and you cross the wrong regions off the map yourself. Ruling out a big region is a bigger claim, so it pays more when it is right and costs more when it is wrong, and a wrong strike never ends the round. Five rounds, free, no account.
- How long does the dialect quiz take?
- About two minutes. There are 29 single-choice questions, drawn from a bank of 60: 33 about the words you use and 27 about how you pronounce things. After those, up to four more are chosen from the rest of the bank to split the profiles still in contention.
- Is the accent quiz free?
- Yes. It is free, has no account and no ads. Contributions are pseudonymous: your answers and chosen hometown are stored without a name or email address, and you can delete your result immediately after submitting it.
- Which English accents and dialects are covered?
- All varieties of English worldwide. The survey scores against 65 regional profiles spanning England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Liberia, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Philippines, and the map itself aggregates responses from any town or city on Earth.
- Can I compare my accent with a friend?
- Yes. After finishing you can share a link that invites someone to take the same quiz, then see a side-by-side comparison: an overall similarity score, the answers you share, and the ones where you differ most.
- Is this an accurate accent test?
- It is a survey instrument, not a phonetic analysis — it hears nothing, it only asks. Within those limits the questions are chosen to divide the English-speaking world where it genuinely divides, pronunciation answers are weighted above vocabulary because they are harder to change deliberately, and profiles are anchored to primary-source regional recordings rather than media performances.
- Does it work if I am not a native English speaker?
- Yes. Answer as you actually speak English day to day and pin where you grew up. Indian, Singaporean, Caribbean and other world Englishes are part of the survey rather than exceptions to it.
