Detective: spot the giveaway in what a stranger says
Detective turns the quiz inside out. Instead of answering questions about your own speech, you read four short lines from a hidden speaker, pick the dialect feature that explains each one, and use what you learn to name the region they grew up in.
How a round works
Each round starts with a stranger and a world map. They say four everyday sentences. Each line is chosen because one pronunciation or vocabulary choice in it belongs to a particular dialect region.
Your job is to name that feature before the map closes in. Pick correctly and the possible regions shrink. Pick badly and you lose a strike. After four lines you make a final guess for the town or city where the speaker grew up.
It is deduction rather than pinning from a distance. Every clue is a bet on how well you read the evidence, the same way Elimination asks you to rule regions off the board.
What makes a good clue
The lines use the same question bank as the accent quiz. You might hear soda versus pop, whether "fur" rhymes with "fair", or whether the evening meal is tea or dinner. Here they arrive as natural speech rather than multiple choice.
A line that mentions a hoagie rather than a sub narrows the East Coast. A line that says y'all rather than you guys points south. A pronunciation that keeps both Rs in "farmer" suggests rhotic speech. The game rewards people who have already explored the accent guides, but it also teaches the splits as you play.
Scoring and strikes
You have three strikes per round. A wrong feature guess costs one. Running out ends the round early with a smaller score. The final pin is scored on how close you land to the speaker's hometown, using the same territory model as Classic mode.
Five rounds make a full game. There is no daily limit and no account. Detective is free practice for reading dialect evidence under a little pressure.
Who it is for
Detective suits people who liked Elimination but wanted the clues to arrive as speech rather than as map labels. It also works as a teaching demo. Each line is a miniature sociolinguistics problem with a definite answer on record.
If you are new to DialectGuessr, start with the accent quiz to learn your own profile, then try Classic or the daily puzzle before Detective. The feature names make more sense once you have seen the question bank.
